Day 1: Exploring the World (Discovering Aotearoa)

My mother is Tongan, and my father is from Manihiki in the Cook Islands. Therefore, I am half Tongan and half Cook Islands.

The special thing about my family is that we believe in God. We care about each other, and on every Sunday we go to church. Our family and culture is important to us. We often go and visit our family in Tonga and around here in Aotearoa when we have time.

At home, mum speaks Tongan and dad speaks Cook Island to us but we mostly reply in english.

  3. Hi Daniel this is Mrs Collins and I'll be commenting on blogs over the term break. Well done on posting and participating in the SLJ this year. I like the post you created on "Discovering Aotearoa" and sharing about your family history. When we moved to New Zealand we had to leave all of our family behind in England, but they, and some of our friends, have been out to visit many times... Do you see yourself as a wonderful mixture of Tongan, Cook Island and Kiwi? Keep blogging, and commenting on others to increase your chance of winning one of the awesome prizes, and to keep up your learning over the school break!

  4. Kia ora Daniel,

I liked the way you described your background - Tongan and Cook Island culture is such a beautiful and unique culture! I like the way you added a map of where you and your family comes from. How special is it that you get the opportunity to travel to Tonga to visit your family? I'm sure they love when you travel over and visit.

It's great that you are surrounded by so many different languages in your home life. Language is a unique part of culture.

My background is made up of mainly Pakeha and Irish. One day I'd love to travel to Ireland to learn more about my culture.

Can’t wait to read more of your blogs! Keep up the great work :)

Don't forget to attribute your images. This is when you say where you got your photos from. Here is the link if you don't know how.

We give out full marks when you attribute your photos!
